Dr. Hsiao-Dong Chiang, received his Ph.D. in
Electrical Engineering from
Professor Chiang's research effort is focused on theoretical developments and practical applications. Particular areas include nonlinear system theory, nonlinear computations and their practical applications to electric circuits, systems, signals and images. He and his co-workers have developed a comprehensive theory of stability regions for general nonlinear dynamical systems (including continuous, discrete, interconnected, hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic nonlinear systems) and their practical applications. He and his co-workers have developed BCU method and Group-based BCU method for fast direct stability assessments for electric power systems. He has developed a new global optimization methodology, called Trust-Tech methodology and is working with his team on the practical applications of Trust-Tech methodology. He and his group also work on the development of computational methods for nonlinear analysis and control of large-scale systems.
On the application aspect, Dr. Chiang and his team collectively develop a
practical package, called SecureSuitetm, for power grid security assessment,
enhancement and applications. The SecureSuite, currently applicable to
100,000-bus power systems, has been installed in several major utilities. An
integrated package developed for voltage security assessment, enhancement and
preventive control in real-time mode and on-line study mode is tightly
integrated in the real-time
Dr. Chiang holds 7 patents related to power system security assessment and control, distribution network analysis and control. Dr. Chiang holds another 2 patents related to global optimal technologies. Dr. Chiang has another 4 pending patent applications; two of them are related to lung-cancer diagnosis systems.
