The subdivision method begins with a random landscape of very little detail, and then adds detail by making increasingly many but also increasingly fine random perturbations to the landscape on each successive iteration. So the initial, random setup can be considered to be the general shape of the landscape with large hills and valleys, and the perturbations can be thought of as the small bumps and imperfections in the landscape.
