B.S. in EE ( Drexel University ), M.S. and Ph.D. ( Penn State ) 1972: Senior Research Associate in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University, Senior Member of IEEE , Life Member of the American Geophysical Union , Member of AAAS and the International Scientific Radio Union (URSI). He was chairman of the Incoherent Scatter Working Group of URSI for three terms. Research interests in space plasma physics include coherent and incoherent scatter radar probing of the atmosphere, signal processing, digital systems, radar systems and techniques. Dr. Swartz directed the construction of the Cornell University Interferometer and its deployment for many special campaigns in Canada, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Brazil, Kwajalein (Western Pacific, Marshall Islands), Puerto Rico, and St. Croix, as well as here in Ithaca and in other U.S. locations. He has been an active user of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico and the Jicamaca Observatory in Peru. At Cornell he teaches courses on digital logic design, RF circuits and sytems, and the theory of electromagnetic fields and waves for which he received the Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teaching Award in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2008, and the Fiona and Donald Li Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Engineering in 2005.
